OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -
There's something new to do in downtown Owensboro and organizers say they're hoping people will stumble across it.
Owensboro residents will be the first to tell you, after 5:00 p.m. downtown Owensboro used to shut down, but that's all changing with Downtown Date Night.
The Stovall's have lived in Owensboro for 46 years. They remember the old downtown Owensboro.
"Kind of dead. Wasn't anything going on down here at night time," recalled Hartsel Stovall.
Now, they're enjoying the new Downtown scene with date night every Thursday.
"We came down and ate and then walked down and looked at the construction how that's coming and all," Hartsel said.
The Stovall's have decided to share date night with friends from Muhlenberg County.
"It's an inexpensive way to get out and enjoy the community. Owensboro is an attractive town and you've got a lot of these older buildings," said Barbara Ford.
Downtown Date Night is the brain child of Steve Champion.
"We're simply trying to program several different venues so that there's several different things to do when you come downtown. Owensboro is music and it's art. It's good food. We want to host a lot of small events so these little mom and pop locally owned bricks and mortar food and beverage people have an opportunity to draw a crowd," Champion told 14 News.
"Hopefully we get so see a lot of new faces. We tried many years ago to stay open past 5:00 and we didn't have much luck but at that time we didn't have that much help downtown," said downtown business owner Jamie Dewitt.
"This isn't just for dates. It's for families too and we're even hoping we get some singles down here, too," Champion said.
Date night starts around 6:30 every Thursday night. It will continue through October.
Champion says he's also working on getting some comedians and actors to perform at different venues on date night.
