MUHLENBERG CO., KY (WFIE) -
Muhlenberg County has a new Parks and Recreation Department and Thursday, the director unveiled a five year action plan.
Improvements are expected at parks all across the county, but this five year plan includes a whole lot more.
For years, Muhlenberg County has been without a traditional Parks and Recreation Department, but that's a thing of the past.
"We had no one place to go get information about all of our activities that we had. We had a lot of good activities but now we'll have access to get to those activities," Chairman of the Parks and Rec system Steven Wells said.
With a new system in place, Tommy Barton is the new Director and he says one of the biggest factors is creating more organization to not only make it easier for residents but increase participation.
"The main goal is to unify all the programs. Right now, we have Central City Baseball, Greenville Baseball and we want to combine them all into a county wide program," Barton told 14 News.
So where will these different sports leagues play? S brand new county wide park located behind the West campus high school, but Barton says it's going to be much more than just athletics.
"It's not just going to be about the ball, there's going to be nature hikes, nature trails, and a nature preserve right there at the park."
Along with the addition of a new county park, Barton says he plans to make improvements to all the smaller neighborhood parks as well.
"They haven't been really dealt with since the late 80's so they need a lot of upgrading, safety surfacing, and all the basketball hoops. It's Kentucky, we need to have nice basketball hoops."
County Officials say the Felix Martin Foundation is the driving force behind this plan thanks to their generous donations and they're excited to hopefully break ground soon.
"It's a game changer for our community. I think for just the recreation," said Wells.
Barton says they should have a website up and running in about two to three weeks where you can learn more about this five year plan.
