TRI-STATE (WFIE) -
Thursday's ATV accident was one of a few the Tri-State has seen in recent weeks, and the DNR has some safety tips for riders.
There have been several recent accidents involving off-road vehicles, injuring several teenagers hurt in separate wrecks in Henderson and Pike Counties.
The DNR's safety tips include having only one rider per vehicle, staying off main roads and highways, and better parental supervision of young riders.
DNR officer Ken Tincher says riders under the age of 16 cannot legally ride an ATV on public roads, and those under the age of 14 can only legally ride with adult supervision.
He also says, it's a good idea to gradually get the feel of an ATV before driving one.
"I would recommend anybody to take an ATV rider's course, safety course. And, you know, just to kind of get the feel for an ATV before they actually get out there and partake in such use."
Tincher also says common sense goes a long way when safely riding an ATV, and it goes without saying, drugs and alcohol will impair anyone's ability to safely ride.
