You can now watch Mesker Park prepare dinner for its animals

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Have you ever wondered what they feed all the animals at Mesker Park Zoo?

Zoo visitors are now able to watch through large windows as the diets for over 700 animals are prepared in their new animal commissary. There's produce, grain, meat, and fish all stored in this new climate controlled building.

Each critter has a special diet and every meal is carefully prepared, weighed, and stored in containers until it's time to eat. Zoo visitors are now able to watch through large windows as the diets for over 700 animals are prepared in this newly constructed facility.

"There are windows right behind us that visitors can come right in front of and watch our guys make the food as they go along. Our gentlemen here, they can open the windows and interact with the visitors. They'll show you the diet book. They'll show you the individual diets from each of the animals they're prepping food for," said Dennis Vogt, the assistant animal curator at Mesker Park.

The commissary is eco-friendly as well, using reusable containers to store the food to reduce waste.
