EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
Responding to safety concerns and vandalism, the parks department confirms a security upgrade along the Evansville Greenway.
If you're walking through the downtown part of the Greenway, you might soon be watched by a camera that's recording your every move.
It's a warning from the parks department that soon an extra set of eyes might be watching your evening stroll.
"We do want to try to pick up on some surveillance and capture some perpetrators if at all possible," said Denise Johnson with the parks department.
Along with security measures already in place, the parks department hopes some high tech cameras could be the answer to some on going vandalism and safety concerns.
"The greenway is always an issue, particularly the riverfront," Johnson said.
Safety is the number one reason Sarah Muntzer says she rarely comes to the riverfront late at night.
"I know whenever they have the fire shows down here they have a lot of security and like people have walked me to my car and I felt a lot more comfortable down here," Greenway user, Sara Muntzer.
When asked if Muntzer would walk downtown with more security, she replied,"Probably, yeah. I think a lot more people would."
The idea of using surveillance, Johnson says, came from Evansville Police. She says officers also requested a list of the top 10 trouble spots along the Greenway and in local parks.
"They assure me that we can watch those troubled spots and hopefully come up with some suspects or perpetrators," Johnson said.
Officials say they are also in talks with a cleaning service to immediately tackle an on going graffiti problem.
"The best way to deal with graffiti is to try to get rid of it as quickly as possible," said Glenn Boberg, with the parks department.
Parks officials say more officers on patrol and even more lighting is also planned for this part of the Greenway.
