Qualified homeowners could have homes weatherized

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Vectren and Energizing Indiana are announcing plans to weatherize 1,000 Evansville homes this year, and the improvements can come at no cost if homeowners meet the right qualifications.

To qualify, those homeowners must be Vectren customers whose household income is 200% of the federal poverty level or less and their home must be at least ten years old. Vectren says those income guidelines mean a family of four would make about $46,000 a year or less to qualify.

On Tuesday, the two companies worked on their first home on West Tennessee Street, putting in new attic insulation and fluorescent lightbulbs. All steps to save energy and keep money in customers' pockets.

"Expenses are going up all the time. Everything that we do costs more. If we can save money on our energy bill, that's a wonderful thing," said Bob Nuss, the Managing Director of Energizing Indiana Initiative. "The other aspect of this that's more important in my opinion is that we need to save energy. That's something that we need to care about. Every kilowatt hour we can save here is a kilowatt hour we don't have to generate, we don't have to make more power plants for."

Energizing Indiana says they plan to weatherize over 60,000 homes this year statewide.
