Shared use path could soon be winding through Downtown O'boro

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

More plans are being made for the Downtown Owensboro area including a 15-foot wide shared used path stretching from the Riverpark Center to Sycamore Square, and extending all the way to just past the Convention Center.

City manager Bill Parrish says he expects the city commission to unanimously vote in favor of funding the path at the next city commission meeting.

When it's all said and done, city leaders say there will be a shared use path stretching across most of the Downtown Owensboro riverfront. A part of the path is already complete from the Riverpark Center down to McConnel Plaza.

"The idea is for folks to come out of that Convention Center and walk back down to our business district," Parrish said.

The city will likely foot the bill to extend the path from McConell plaza to the end of the Convention Center, then private developers will take the path from the center down to Sycamore Square.

"A dressed up, upscale greenbelt bike path. You can expect to see people walking up that, people with strollers, people on bicycles. The river belongs to everyone in Owensboro. That is the beach for Owensboro, Kentucky," Parrish said.

"It's a way to get people out. Get them active," said resident Mark Moore.

"The river is not going to dry up in my lifetime and as long as there's people going up and down the river, I think you're going to see a return on your investment," said Larry Domson who is touring Owensboro.

City leaders tell 14 News work will start spring 2013 with a completion date of December 2013.
