DAWSON SPRINGS, KY (WFIE) -
The Dawson Springs School System has a new superintendent, but he's not new to this school district.
The new superintendent is Charles Proffitt. It's the first time he's ever held this position and he's excited to get things going.
Charles Proffitt is no stranger to the Dawson Springs School District. In fact, he's worked in the system for the past six years.
"Our past superintendents kind of taught me, groomed me, been my mentor to help step me into this position," Proffitt said.
Earlier this year, Alexis Seymore, the school's former superintendent announced her retirement and board members including Vicki Allen say they focused on finding someone who knew their system.
"He's very familiar with Alexis and working with her and I think he'll have new ideas to bring to it and continue with the way we had things in the past," Allen said.
Just last year the district finished in the top 10% of the Commonwealth in Core Content test scores, Proffitt says he has every intention of continuing their academic success.
"For us being a smaller district, every individual counts and so we have a unique situation where we can work one on one with students," Proffitt said.
Proffitt says one example of how they plan to maintain high scores despite budget cuts is through a new Bring Your Own Device to school policy they piloted a few months ago, giving students a chance to use their own smartphones or other gadgets through a school monitored network.
"It allows students that already have those devices to bring them in and use them in the classrooms. Our teachers can utilize them with their daily instruction," Proffitt said.
This new policy will fully kick off once the school year begins on August 1st.
Proffitt says for this upcoming school year he plans to increase the involvement of the community in the school system.
