EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
In December, the Evansville based nonprofit canine rescue group, It Takes A Village, was hoping to win a $25,000 grant, and they got their wish.
They're just a few weeks away from opening a no-kill rescue center, the first, they say, in Evansville.
"It's definitely a dream come true," said Kelly Miller who is on the board of directors.
The dream Miller is talking about is bright green and right along Stockwell Road. The site of It Takes A Village's no-kill rescue center for dogs.
Miller and fellow board members, along with some It Takes A Village volunteers have been working hard converting a former storage building into their new home.
They've been getting some help from their landlord, too. Andrea Will's family owns the Stockwell Inn next door to the shelter. She's excited to welcome their new four-legged neighbors.
"I'm hoping that it gets a lot of visibility and people will drop in and you know see what it's all about. Then maybe they didn't happen to come in for a dog, but they find one they love and the rest is history, you know?" Will said.
In all, the new facility will have around 20 to 25 kennels. They'll mostly be used for emergency situations, and room a new liter of puppies that someone has no room for elsewhere. Also inside, expect a space for dogs to play and bond with potential new owners and a thrift store that will work as an ongoing fundraiser.
A big grand opening is planned later this month, and while there's still a lot of work to be done, the group is ready to move in.
"This is just helping us to be able to do so much more for the community and really help a lot of people and four-legged people," Miller said.
The grand opening celebration is on Saturday, July 21st at 1417 North Stockwell Road.
