PIKE CO, IN (WFIE) -

60-year-old Jimmy Lee was on his way to do something no pet owner wants to do, when his day got even worse.

Lee, of Winslow, was told his dog had been struck by a vehicle and was critically injured.

He decided to put the injured pet out of its misery. He grabbed his handgun and started heading to the area near his home along Meridian Road.

He began walking down a four foot embankment, but unfortunately for him, it had become slick with the recent rainfall.

He slipped and fell causing the handgun to fire into his left thigh.

Someone called Pike County EMS, and they provided medical assistance to Mr. Lee at the scene.

Some friends then took him to St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville for treatment.

Indiana Conservation Officers and Pike County Sheriffs' Department worked together to investigate the case.
