Fate of LST 325 still uncertain

Posted: Updated:
EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke will tour the LST 325 today with a member of the ship's board of directors.

The LST could leave Evansville for another home port, unless the city and the ship's board of directors extend the current contract.

The mayor was invited to tour the World War Two ship as the city and the board discuss the ship's future in Evansville.

Other cities have expressed an interest in becoming the ship's home port.

LST board members tell us the memorial board has been in talks with at least two other cities.

Peoria, IL and Jeffersonville, IN, across the Ohio River from Louisville.

Mayor Winnecke made a statement back in June and said he's confident the city and LST can reach a mutual agreement to keep the ship in Evansville.

The mayor says the city has been implementing new marketing plans to help bring visitors to the ship.

The ship's current contract with the city runs through 2015.

Mayor Winnecke will tour the ship later this morning at 10:45.

We will have a crew there and bring you the latest later today.
