This heat is just brutal on people who work outside, so most are taking extra precautions.

When it comes to hot jobs, roofing has got to be right there at the top.

According to OSHA, thousands of workers get sick from the heat every year, and this extended heat wave is making their jobs  all the more dangerous.

An early start and lots of good old fashioned H2O are helping to keep roofers and from falling victim to the summer heat.

"First, I think you have to mentally prepare yourself and then secondly, make sure you're plenty hydrated. Lots of protein. Calories help," said roofer John Hamelin.

According to OSHA, dozens of outdoor workers die from heat-related illness each year in the US, and another day of record-setting temperatures has crew leaders taking every precaution.

"It's very dangerous, but I keep an eye on everybody. If anybody feels tingly or anything, I tell them, please go down to the ground, get in the shade, we'll get you some water," Hamelin said.

Across the Tri-State, emergency rooms are reporting a spike in patients sick from the heat.

St. Mary's Medical Center says it's treating between 20 and 25 patients each day for heat-related illness.

"They don't realize how fast their body can actually be losing their water content," said Executive Director of Emergency Services Nancy McCleary.

Many crews wrapped up their work-day early as an added precaution, so they can get out of the heat and enjoy a cooler afternoon.

If you or someone you know is showing signs of heat-related illness, you're advised seek immediate medical attention.

Dozens of people are telling us about other jobs that are dangerous in this heat.
