BOONVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
Over 25 Tri-State families are beating the heat Thursday night with new air-conditioners they got for free.
"I kept on getting on the computer and seeing where it was going," recalled Karen Rhoades, who will be getting an air conditioner for free.
While many people are dreading the triple-digit heat, BNG customers like Rhoades were hoping the 4th of July temperature would be just that.
"When it got past a hundred, I thought, 'Wow this can't be happening,'" Rhoades recalled.
And that's because BNG Heating and Cooling says anyone who bought a complete Bryant system between April 1st and June 26th would get their money back if the temperature was over a hundred degrees on Independence Day. Wednesday's temp? 103.
"It was kind of a crazy idea on a whim. We got with a weather insurance company and we insured July 4th for a hundred degrees," said BNG sales associate Mark Schmitz.
BNG says that means about 26 families will only have to pay taxes and optional extended warranties on their new air conditioners, the company giving away over $175,000 in appliances and labor costs.
"You know, the odds were really against it but we've just had record-breaking heat this year," Schmitz said.
The company says they're happy to put money back into the local economy and some lucky customers say, this means more comfort and cash for their families.
"I'm very grateful to have it happen, very grateful," Rhoades says.
BNG says they're in the process of contacting the qualifying customers. The company says there will be more creative campaigns coming up.
