SANTA CLAUS, IN (WFIE) -
Beating the heat at Holiday World, thousands of people pack the amusement and water park everyday and have a good time, despite the record breaking temperatures.
When it's this hot, you have to do what you can to stay cool.
Some may call it crazy. but there are plenty of others happy to slather on the sunscreen, plop on a hat and visit Holiday World on one of the toastiest days of the year.
Either way, it's steamy enough to have Victorian Darden and her crew from Tennessee on a mission.
"We're going straight to the pool," she told 14 News.
For those braving it on dry land, hydrating is always important. Even better when you're doing it in the shade.
Even in Splashin' Safari, it can be tough to keep cool, especially when you're waiting in an hour long line for the Mammoth, although many insist, it's worth the wait.
Holiday World President Dan Koch says they're taking that wait time and the weather into consideration, adding extra water for guests. Employees get a little special treatment too.
"Our hosts and hostesses have cold bandanas to wrap around their heads, we come around and then on their breaks they also get popsicles," Koch told our 14 News crew.
One way you won't chill out right now is by riding Pilgrim's Plunge.
Holiday World closed the ride Sunday afternoon because of the drought-like conditions.
"It was a voluntary water effort on our part, to conserve water for the town, and for ourselves obviously to entertain our guests. Uses a lot of water so we decided to conserve water at Pilgrim's Plunge," Koch said.
Rest assured, Koch says it'll be open again soon.
In the meantime, guests seem to be doing alright, grabbing a drink and a pair of shades, and enjoying the summer sun.
