Historic Evansville tavern closes; you can own a little piece of it

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

An Evansville tavern goes up for auction next month.

Neighbors tell 14 News that Gloria's Corral Club at Kratzville Road and Allen Lane closed down a few weeks ago. It had been open for over 50 years.

Ralph Smith Auction Realty's website has the announcement of the auction, and  people who frequent Gloria's say it's a bar right out of an episode of 'Cheers' and they're sad to see it go.

But now, the doors are closed at Gloria's Corral Club and a sign advertising the upcoming auction hangs between the posts. Paula Gray says it's sad to see.

"I just couldn't believe it. I was dumbfounded to be honest. It was just unbelievable. I was like, it's been there since I was a kid. I wasn't even old enough to go in there," Gray said.

14 News spoke with auctioneer David Nevil over the phone and he says their company has had control of the property for a few weeks since the owner retired. He says there's plenty of items that will hit the auction block.

"Beer signs, beer memorabilia, there will be some restaurant equipment, bar stools, you know just everything they've had ever," Nevil said.

But some folks who live near Gloria's say a lot has changed in the area since the bar shut down because they say they have had problems with noise and with occasional fighting.

"You know, it woke me up a few times with people being rowdy and people squealing their tires leaving. Just closing at 3:00 in the morning and the crowd leaving, issues with that," said Jeff Seeber.

But others around the neighborhood say they will miss having a place to go relax and have a few drinks so close to home.

"Nothing replaces Gloria's. Nothing does," Gray said.

The auction is scheduled for August 25th at 10:00 a.m. Click here to see a list of things that will be up for auction from Gloria's.
