Evansville preps for fireworks

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

The Evansville Fireworks show is still on for Independence Day, and organizers are preparing for a big crowd. They've seen around 20,000 to 25,000 people in the past, and expect even more this year, especially out of towners.

It's the main event in the celebration of our nation's independence. Officials with the Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville, which is sponsoring the $50,000 display say this year's show is guaranteed to please.

"It's got a great finale and a lot of fireworks, so it should be just as good as last year if not better," says Scott Hubiak with GAGE.

It's one of the few shows that is still scheduled to go on as planned, after several Tri-State celebrations were cancelled or postponed due to various burn and fireworks bans. But Captain Andy Chandler with the Evansville Police Department says conditions are still favorable for the show to go on.

"It's shot off of a barge, it's not on the ground. We'll make the sure the wind isn't so strong that it will carry embers," says Chandler.

GAGE organizers say being one of the only shows in the Tri-State means they've had to plan ahead for even more people packing the riverfront.

"But that will be good, we have plenty to do down there," says Hubiak. "We have food vendors, live music, everything."

Captain Chandler says police officers will be on foot, on bicycles and four wheelers, and in squad cars watching out for any issues. But he says the current bans are helping.

"In the past the problems we've had are people within that small confines, trying to set out fireworks and sparklers," says Chandler.

But he says overall they don't anticipate any problems, and hope that folks will brave the heat to come enjoy the lights.
