Nonprofits seeing more ask for help in heat

Posted: Updated:
EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Because of this heatwave, nonprofit agencies are seeing more people than ever asking for help. But, officials with the Community Action Program of Evansville tell 14 News that their funds are limited.

You can find information about their offered services on their energy assistance website, but CAPE officials say that assistance is currently limited to those who received help with their heating bills.

Executive Director Alice Weathers explains that because of the mild winter, they had some funds left over for energy assistance this summer.

CAPE was able to add $65 to help with a person's utility bill starting this month.

But Weathers says this is only for those who received assistance in the winter. Cape is also not providing fans now, but hopefully that will change.

"Sometimes when the heat becomes a major challenge, the state may get additional funding from the feds and they'll pass it on to us. Sometimes our partners in the community, box stores or other places will donate fans to us," Weathers said.

Weathers says even though it is exceptionally hot, they are still seeing around the same amount of calls for assistance they receive every summer.
