OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -
We may be experiencing a drought, but the rain fell in torrents in Owensboro where there was some street flooding on Monday night.
Owensboro hasn't seen this much rain in a very long time. In fact, over three inches of rain fell very quickly.
Because the ground is so dry, it's having trouble soaking it all in and that's a big reason why we're seeing some flash flooding.
However, with more high temps on the way, the ground will be dry again soon.
"Ground soaking up as much as it can, but it's just all flooding going down the street and the gutters and stuff just can't keep up. Your cars get stalled and flooded and then you can skid if you're not paying any attention, especially when it gets dark like this," said driver Derek Boarman.
Owensboro Police say some streets partially closed due to flooding.
Police say that parts of these roads have major flooding on them and should be avoided:
- Carter Rd.
- W. Parrish by the Sports Center
- Corner of McFarland and Gordendale
- the intersection of 7th & Sycamore
- the intersection of New Hartford and Veach
- the intersection of Ford & Mayfair
- 18th Streets
- Griffith
- West 2nd
If you try to cross some of those streets while parts of them are closed, police can issue you a $100 fine. OPD is urging drivers to just turn around and find another way.
