NEWBURGH, IN (WFIE) -

While most Tri-State kids are beating the heat by staying inside, in Newburgh, some Tri-State girls are doing the exact opposite. They're outside playing ball.

It's a set of games that's been in the works for weeks. The Strike Out the Cure Fastpitch Tournament has brought 36 teams of girls to battle it out for the championship and to raise money for breast cancer.

The nearly 400 players range in age from 8 to 14, and each played a couple of games every day. Their schedule depending on if they won or lost.

Organizer Mike Joest says the triple digit heat was a concern. They set up a station for the players to get plenty of liquids, and they also set up fans around the dug outs and made sure the girls spent their off in the shade.

Everyone was watching out for each other.

"Yeah, most of the girls if they have a problem they'll tell us they don't feel right or something's wrong. We've got enough girls that we can set them on the bench and put someone that's fresh in for them," Joest said.

The tournament is wrapping up this evening.
