New statewide smoking ban now being enforced

Posted: Updated:
WARRICK CO., IN (WFIE) -

A statewide smoking ban started in Indiana on Sunday.

Evansville and Vanderburgh County are already smoke free, but several other counties weren't.

14 News spoke to Dan Kollker, who owns the Knob Hill Tavern in Newburgh, and he says he is cautious but also optimistic when it comes to the smoking ban.

The new law bans smoking anywhere inside of most public places, including restaurants and bars. However, certain organizations such as VFW's and American Legions are allowed to decide if they would like to allow indoor smoking.

Kollker says that only a few of the bar's patrons have been outwardly against the new ban, and that new customers are coming in as a result of the new law.

Obviously, Kollker says he cannot predict the future, but he feels confident the new law will be good for business.

"My employees, they're in favor of it actually. A lot of my employees smoke, but they think it will be maybe a chance for them to quit. I've not had any negative comments from them at all actually," Kollker said.

The Warrick County Sheriff's Office says Indiana Excise Police will be enforcing the new ban.
