POSEY CO., IN (WFIE) -

Firefighters in Posey County spent more than an hour battling a house fire Saturday in Marrs, Indiana.

The fire was at 5623 Bayer Drive and firefighters say the home is a total loss.

Marrs Township Fire Chief Larry Schenk says about 60 firefighters assisted Saturday, and that with the added intensity of the day's heat, firefighters were battling heat exhaustion.

The Marrs Township Fire department says the call came just before 5:00 p.m. Saturday night.

Brooke Simpkins is one of the neighbors and she says she saw what happened.

"I saw a little bit of smoke and I thought, 'The neighbor might have a fire going or something.' and then we took off around the corner and we stopped in the neighbors' driveway and thought, 'That's not a normal fire. Their house is on fire,'" Simpkins said.

Simpkins says she ran back home and told her mom to make the call.

"About a third of the house was fully involved when we arrived here," said Schenk.

Schenk says it took about an hour and a half to contain the fire, and that no one was home at the time. With the added heat of the day, Schenk says a few firefighters were the people who sustained injuries.

"The only injuries we had was some heat exhaustion. There was three firemen that was taken to the hospital. It's 106 today. It's tough, it's tough for anybody out here. And so we called for a lot of help because we had a big fire on a hot day," Schenk told 14 News.

Family members of the victims say this is a tragic loss and a very emotional time for them. But they also say they're just glad nobody was seriously hurt.

Schenk says they do not yet know what caused the fire.

Eight firefighters were taken to Deaconess Hospital. Some were transported from the scene and others had already returned to their station when they became ill. None of the their injuries are life threatening.
