Heat major concern for Victoria National Tournament

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Hundreds of volunteers and spectators are looking on at tournament play at the United Leasing Golf Tournament and many say, staying safe in the heat is a major factor.

We're told that, throughout the day, there were three or four incidences of volunteers getting over heated. If you look around the course, you will see volunteers in blue shirts, running booths, shuttling in golf carts, and assisting players.

Volunteer Coordinator Penne Gramball says they have been proactive about the heat, sending out emails to volunteers about dressing for the heat and bringing extra water.

They can also find relief at the Volunteer Village, where there is food and plenty of drinks, as well as sunscreen.

Volunteers say it's a great place to take a break in the shade, but they're also keeping an eye out for volunteers on the course.

"There is also on course hospitality for those volunteers, so its here, there's plenty of replenishment out for them, so they don't have to bake in the sun and be at the far end of the course," said Gramball.

The volunteers also periodically take breaks during the heat of the day so they don't become exhausted.

If you are going to be out in the heat here are some tips to pay close attention to:

  • Stay in the A/C as much as possible. If you're out at the golf course today, find some relief inside the clubhouse or even just the golf pro shop.
  • Drink water continuously.
  • Slow down from your normal pace.
  • Wear light colored clothing, SPF sunscreen and sunglasses.
