Firefighters in southern Hancock County battled a forest fire last night and a mobile home fire earlier this week.
Firefighters tell 14 News the ground is bone dry in Hancock County and say that's a nightmare for a rural county like theirs.
It's been a long week for Hancock County firefighters just last night they battled a forest fire in the southern part of the county. Officials say someone was burning some wood and left the area without putting the fire out. It quickly spread throughout the woods, and the Division of Forestry had to be called in to clear a path so firefighters could put out the blaze.
"Don't burn anything," said Aimee Claiborne-Young, whose in laws home was burned down.
Earlier this week, firefighters battled a mobile home fire off of Highway 69. That home belonged to Aimme Claiborne-Young's in laws.
"I took my daughter to Owensboro to take a test and when we got home we saw the smoke when we came around the corner. I was like, 'oh my god. I hope it's not the house or the trailer. It was big and it was very , very scary," Claiborne-Young said.
Claiborne-Young was able to capture the fire on video.
"They shot up like 60 feet I think. There was about three fire departments here and everybody was working very hard to keep in from spreading to the garage," Claiborne-Young said.
The fire destroyed the home, but luckily no one was inside the trailer during the fire.
"They lost everything except for what they had in the little building that didn't catch on fire. They're just gunna have to rebuild like everybody else. They do have insurance. They've been going to thrift shops to pick up some clothing," Claiborne-Young said.
Hancock County firefighters tell 14 News they've only had a couple inches of rain where they live in the past few months.
