OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -
These scorching temperatures have some residents struggling to pay their utility bills.
The Help Office in Owensboro says it expects to see more people seeking help as the temperature rises.
"This is the food pantry and you see we have a lot of empty shelves," said volunteer; Reid Haire.
But there is one service volunteers are helping out with more than normal.
"Because of the weather the OMU bills, the Kenergy bills are really, really high. People are needing a lot of assistance," said Vicky McNeal, the assistant director of the Help Office.
The Help Office is doing all they can to keep residents cool.
"We have constant calls for fans," McNeal said.
"It's just not enough during the summer time," Haire said.
They are now down to only one fan and a rising pile of cut off notices.
"Getting utilities cut at this point is not an option it's so hot," McNeal said.
A big concern of McNeals is the older clients she sees.
"We're pretty much the only place they have left to get help from," McNeal said.
Volunteers say they'll help everyone they can and go out of the way to make sure residents stay cool and safe.
"We try to help them along with St. Vincent, Depaul, Salvation Army, and so many other good organizers," Haire said.
If you're needing help or would like to donate a fan or air conditioning unit, you can contact the Owensboro Help Office on 1316 West 4th Street in Owensboro, KY. Their phone number is 270-685-4971. They are open Monday- Friday at 9 a.m. to Noon.
