HOPKINS CO., KY (WFIE) -
A Kentucky woman has been arrested with charges of murder and criminal abuse of a 4-year-old child.
The Hopkins County Sheriff's Office says they started an investigation into the death of a child in April. The investigation revealed that Cayden Kirby, her stepson, died while in the care of Kelley M. Kirby of Earlington.
Cayden was in town, from Georgia, visiting his biological father, Cody Kirby.
Investigators say Kelley Kirby told them the child was injured in a fall, however, detectives now say it was learned during the investigation that the extent of the injuries were not consistent with a fall.
"The injuries did not coincide with the type of injuries you would get from a fall. There were just things that didn't add up and as every day went by, we found more evidence that led us to believe that is wasn't a fall. Someone had caused that injury to the little boy," said Det. Will Coursey with the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's office says they also found it wasn't the fire time Kirby had abused Cayden.
The case was presented to the Hopkins County Grand Jury on Tuesday and an indictment was returned for the arrest of Kirby for the charges of murder and criminal abuse, which stemmed from an incident in August of last year.
Kirby was arrested and lodged in the Hopkins County Detention Center. Her bond is listed at $250,000 dollars cash.
