MERIDEN, CT (WFSB) -

A Meriden man riding a bicycle was hit by a car and police said the driver tried to throw the victim off his car before taking off.

The incident was reported in Meriden on Saturday night on Lewis Avenue near the mall.

John Denis, 55, was riding his bike on the shoulder of the road when police said he was hit from behind by a driver.

Police said for at least several hundred feet, Denis was hanging on to the car's sunroof, but the driver was prying his fingers off the sunroof so he could push him off the car and take off.

Denis was found on the street by a woman near the intersection of Lewis Avenue and Bartlett Street.

Police said the car didn't leave any broken parts behind, but Denis said he thinks he was hit by a small, red vehicle.

Denis suffered from some broken bones and scrapes.
