Fiery crash on I-64 claims life of driver

PERRY CO., IN (WFIE) -

An serious afternoon accident claims the life of the driver.

The coroner has identified the driver as 32-year-old Joshua R. Tomlin of Granite City, Illinois.

Indiana State Police say they responded to the crash around 12:41 p.m. on I-64 at mile post 79 eastbound.

Troopers say a teal blue Nissan was traveling eastbound on I-64 at the 79 mile marker, passing several vehicles at a high rate of speed. Authorities say that after passing the vehicles, Tomlin lost control and left the roadway.

ISP says that after leaving the roadway, the vehicle traveled up the embankment and hit the overpass for SR 37, and after hitting the overpass, Tomlin, who was not wearing his seatbelt, was ejected from the car.  The car rolled down the embankment and came to rest on top of Tomlin and then caught fire.

The eastbound lanes of I-64 were closed for approximately 1.5 hours while emergency crews processed and cleaned up the scene.
