DUBOIS CO, IN (WFIE) -

This weekend, Dubois County is making sure their network of worldwide communications is in place in the case of a disaster.

Amateur radio operators are gathering at the Dubois County Park, taking part in the national Amateur Radio Relay League Field Day.

Operating amateur radios may be a hobby, but Dubois County EMA says it's a crucial tool in relaying information during major disasters.

EMA Director Gary Fritz says, around 15 radio operators are gathering this week to make sure their skills are up to par, and that their equipment is working.

"If the other means of communications aren't available, we could still communicate in fact from this location to the Emergency Operation Center in Indianapolis to give them status information as to what's going on here at the local level and also to request resources that may be needed in the event of a disaster," Fritz told 14 News.

That event runs all night, through 2:00 p.m. Eastern time Sunday.
