EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
The lockout of union workers by Allied Waste in Evansville has been suspended.
The Allied main office is where workers have been originally locked out, but they are not there anymore.
Friday, Allied and the union released a joint statement saying employees can return to work Monday at their regular scheduled time.
Allied representatives say they believe the union has been able to reach 71 of the 79 workers originally locked out. The lock out started May 9th.
Contract negotiations continue. The main sticking point has been on an employee pension plan.
"They were out of work. What were they doing, where were they stay at? How was they eating? You know they have family, I know they have families, but I'm glad they're back to work," said Schrond Blanks, who works across the street from the office.
The decision to let the workers return is good for 30 days, unless it's extended.
Friday, a City Council member told us it's wise Allied allowed workers to return, because currently, the city is taking bids of garbage service contracts.
