Students working hard to pass IREAD

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

For the EVSC third graders who didn't pass the new IREAD test last school year are getting a second chance next week.

80% of EVSC's third graders did pass the test, but this month, those who did not have been doing some extra reading to prepare for next week.

EVSC says around 200 students are participating in the remedial program and are getting ready for the retakes. On Wednesday, students at Fairlawn and Dexter Elementary did some practice runs by reading both fiction and non-fiction works and answering comprehension questions. The IREAD interventionist says reading books all year long is the best way to keep skills sharp.

"After they have so much momentum going in the school year, they stop school for the summer and then that learning kind of regresses a little bit, so we really try to promote the summer programs," said Staci Kinman, the literacy coach at Fairlawn Elementary. "They've been preparing and we took a practice test yesterday and they feel confident, so I think they're ready."

The state requires all students to pass the IREAD exam before moving on to fourth grade.
