Locally based insurance company reportedly stopping service at end of year

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

A locally based insurance company is reportedly stopping service at the end of this year.

In a news release from Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield, it says that Welborn Health Plans will stop providing benefits at the end of this year.

Several government employees are insured by Welborn. Anthem says that Welborn will exit the market on December 31st because of changes in the insurance market and significant investments that would have to be made to continue providing high-quality benefits.

Welborn serves about 30,000 people in its group business.

In the release, Anthem says Welborn Health Plans has endorsed it as its provider of choice.

A memo that was sent out by an administrator at the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Public Library states that Welborn is holding meetings with brokers Wednesday to provide more information about their decision and what will happen next with existing clients.

It goes on to say what this means for the library is our release from our multi-year contract. It says they will begin shopping for a new healthcare plan immediately.

14 News made several calls about this situation this afternoon. The mayor's office says they weren't made aware of this yet.

We'll continue to follow this story.
