HENDERSON CO., KY (WFIE) -

With almost 600 students practicing archery, and a world wide championship, archery is big in Henderson.

With the Henderson Fiscal Court deciding to help fund a new outdoor archery facility on Tuesday, it's about to get even bigger.

Within the vast 535 acres of land in the Sandy Lee Watkins Park and in between the corn and wildflowers, you'll soon be able to see a state of the art archery facility.

"We're going to build a first class, outdoor range for the community," said Chase Fulcher.

Fulcher, a pro-staffer for Hoyt and Easton Archery, says he was already able to secure as much as $100,000 in state and national funds.

With $25,000 from the county, they'll be able to afford the best.

"We're going to have elevated targets. We're going to have long range targets, short-range targets for children. We're gonna build permanent restroom facilities," Fulcher said.

An outdoor facility like this is unusual, even nationally.

"They don't exist because who's going to mow, weed eat, maintain the range. It's got to be done in a safety fashion," Fulcher.

Officials haven't chosen a site for the facility yet, but Henderson County Engineer William Hubiak says when they do, they'll make the best out of the land.

"They want to have different terrains and elevations differences, to give people the feel of being out in the environment," Hubiak said.

When can you expect to see the new range?

"We got to get the leases done, the documents done, and it may take us six months to a year, but it's gonna happen," Fulcher said.

Fulcher says thanks to an archery scholarship, five Henderson High School students will be able to go to college this year.
