One person was injured, Tuesday, in a crash on I-64 at the Ferdinand exit at milepost 63 east.

Preliminary information reveals that at approximately 9:24 a.m. the Ferdinand First Responders had been dispatched to I-64 mile post 63 eastbound in reference to a 28-year-old male that was ill.  The first responders arrived and were treating the ill male.

One of the first responders, Bradley Haas, had parked his white 2003 Ford truck west of where the ill male and other first responders were and was directing the oncoming traffic into the passing lane.  Haas' vehicle was partially on the shoulder and in the driving lane with his blue light activated and four-way flashers on.

At approximately 9:50 a.m. a white, 2010 International tri-axle was traveling east approaching the scene.  The International was operated by 22-year-old Derek B. Love, from Palmyra,  and is owned by Riverton Truckers Inc. out of Jeffersonville.  As Love approached the scene he failed to merge into the passing lane and hit Haas' truck.  After the collision the International rolled onto its side.  Haas, fortunately, was able to avoid being hit.

Love was transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital by Dubois County EMS for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Love has preliminarily been cited for Speed to Fast to Avoid Collision.

Further investigation revealed that Love had become distracted and looked down at some documents just prior to the crash. Master Trooper Randy Neighbors said, "This is a perfect example of why you must pay attention while operating a vehicle.  Being distracted or not paying attention even for a second or two is dangerous. We were very fortunate in this case that no one else was injured or killed."

The eastbound lanes of I-64 were closed for approximately three hours while crews cleared the scene.
