Team captains get ready for 15th annual Race for the Cure

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Team captains have a lot to do before this year's 15th Annual Susan G. Komen Evansville Tri-State Race for the Cure on September 22.

There are forms to fill out, dates to remember and, most importantly, there is money to be raised.

"Our goal this year is we're challenging them to do $15.  If you can ask 15 people for $15 that would be $1.5 million dollars that we would be bringing in.  That's a big number," said Davena Day, Teams Chair for the Komen Evansville Tri-State Affiliate Race for the Cure.

But fundraising was just one of the topics discussed at the Race for the Cure Team Captain Kickoff, held Monday evening and Tuesday morning at the Casino Aztar Executive Conference Center.

"This is our chance to kind of give them ideas, ways to get more teams involved, give them the background that they need to know what this is all about.  Why are we doing this," explained Day.

It's a meeting Ashley Fish says was worth the drive from Vincennes. She's a mammography tech at the Breast Care Center at Good Samaritan Hospital.  She's also a first-time team captain. Ashley says she's leaving the meeting with a few ideas to take back north with her.

"The doing a yard sale or you know a bake sale.  And then they've got the Tinkled Pink thing to decorate a porta potty so I think that'd be kind of fun, kind of cute," Fish said.

Tinkled Pink.

It's a funny name, but a new idea for this year's event.

Teams can reserve porta potties for $30, then decorate or advertise on them however they want.

And that's not the only new addition.

"The fact that it's on a Saturday, sometimes we've got people that can't come that want to that are in sporting events, band events, whatever.  And so we came up with a way for them to still feel like they're a part.  It's called ExtraCURErricular.  And they would sign up and actually receive a wristband that has a logo and everything on there.  And though they can't be here they're still supporting the race," Day said.

Last year, more than 14,000 people participated in Race for the Cure, raising $.5 million to be used locally.

Registration for the 15th Annual Susan G. Komen Evansville Tri-State Race for the Cure is open.
