Victoria National Golf Club, home to the 2012 United Leasing Championship, is as beautiful as it is challenging. At the start of the tournament, the field of 156 will start with hole #1.
"Hole #1 is actually the third longest par 4 we have here at the club," said club pro, David Von Hoffman. "It's 442 yards from the back tee. You'll probably see a lot of guys play the three wood or a hybrid club off the tee, because the further you go down this fairway, it gets a little narrow."
With little obvious trouble, players may underestimate the challenge hole one poses. Hoffman says the rough on the hole is so deep, players may actually prefer to hit from the bunker.
"It's typical of a U.S. Open or PGA Championship-style rough. It's tougher for them to control shots out of the rough versus the bunkers for sure," Hoffman said.
All-in-all, success on hole one will come from conservative play, as laying up with shorter, straighter shots will help players avoid the rough. And from here, the course only becomes more challenging.
