EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
The Evansville-Vanderburgh County Animal Care and Control Facility euthanized more than a dozen animals this morning after the city says the facility was close to being overcrowded.
The city says the facility was down to three open pens and many of the animals had been kept longer than the policy allows, which is eight days.
The city says 14 cats were put to sleep, at least seven of those were feral or sick. Five dogs were set to be euthanized, two of which were sick, but a rescue group took one of the sick dogs.
The city is holding off on the other euthanizations to give any rescue groups the chance to pick them up.
"What has happened is that there have not been a lot of euthenasia's taking place out there. We've had a change in the director on Friday. Kerry Camp is stepping in interim, went out to the facility and it was near capacity and he had to make some decisions as to what to do," said Ella Johnson-Watson, the Communications Director with the City of Evansville.
The city says it always prefer adoptions over euthanizations, and it's willing to work with animal rescue groups.
The facility's manager recently took another position within the city, and the city is looking for her replacement.
