Warrick Co. businesses preparing for July 1st smoking ban

WARRICK CO., IN (WFIE) -

A smoking ban goes into effect July 1st in Indiana. That means no smoking in restaurants or bars inside of restaurants.

Businesses are getting the specifics of the law on Tuesday at a Smoke-Free Air workshop.

The Warrick County Chamber of Commerce is urging business owners to register for a free workshop on Tuesday morning on the new Indiana smoking ban. Those attending will receive information on the ban and how they can make sure they are complying with the law.

Smoking will be ban in most public places and places of employment, and also prohibited within eight feet of a public entrance. Smoking will be allowed in bars, riverboats and certain organizations like VFW's.

Signage is also required as part of the law, some businesses have already begun the transition, giving patrons a heads up on the change. Waiters say they've seen mixed reviews on the law, especially those who drive from smoke-free Evansville to smoke and dine in Warrick County.

"There are some people since we've put up the sign that are unhappy because they say this is one of the only places they can smoke, but at the same time there are people who come in to a seating section and are too close to the smoking area and are bothered and ask for another section because they are too close to the bar. It's divided," said Jose Ramon Arambula, a waiter at Los Bravos.

Workers at Los Bravos say they hope the great tasting Mexican food will keep customers coming, even when they go officially smoke free on July 1st.

The Warrick County Smoke Free Air meeting will be held at the library in Newburgh at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.
