Public incident results in domestic battery charges against former mayor

OAKLAND CITY, IN (WFIE) -

The former mayor of Oakland City was in court on Monday to hear a long list of charges he now faces for his alleged behavior at a public event Saturday night.

Alfred Cooper was attending a fundraiser for local firefighters at the Oakland City golf club with his wife. Witnesses say he was intoxicated and grabbed his wife by the wrist and jerked her up. Witnesses say he also hit his adult son.

A police officer working security tried to step in, Cooper allegedly head-butted him.

He was arrested that night and now faces charges of public intoxication, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, battery with injuries, and domestic battery.

Cooper had been the mayor of Oakland City for the last 4 years. He left office in December '11 after being voted out.

Cooper's next court date is July the 17th.
