EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Some children made that gruesome discovery Saturday as they were walking along the river bank. The investigation continues into what happened and why.

Police and county officials 14 News spoke to Saturday say the body looks as though it had been there for an extended amount of time.

They also say it is difficult to identify this person at this time, and that they hope to learn more about this case in the coming days.

Saturday afternoon, three local kids say they were walking near the river when they saw something in the water, they did not expect to see.

"We're like, 'That's a dead body.' So we took off," noted Emily Dietz, who found the body.

After telling their grandparents what they found, they say the adults called the police.

"It was kind of unexpected for the day," said Justin Ray, who also found body.

"Not what we wanted to see on an average day," Emily said.

Henderson and Evansville rescue crews responded to the scene. Since the body was discovered in Henderson territory, just west of the twin bridges, Kentucky State Police claimed the investigation.

"All we know right now is we recovered the body of a male. We have no identification whatsoever at this time. There will be an autopsy performed tomorrow in Louisville at the medical examiner's office. And hopefully we'll have a little identification there," said Henderson Co. Coroner Bruce Farmer.

Farmer says there is no initial indication of foul play in this case. He also says Kentucky State Police are checking missing persons records to further understand who this man might have been.

"Their family is probably thinking like, 'Oh my gosh, he's missing. Where is he?' and I just feel happy we found him," said Nick Dietz, one of three children who found the body.

As mentioned, the autopsy will take place Sunday. We'll bring the latest on this story as it becomes available.
