CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A Charlotte woman appears to have discovered a graveyard on her property.
When Roslyn Wright moved into her Eben Drive home five years ago, she knew there was a graveyard in the woods behind her house.
"We've always assumed that everything was okay with our back yard; this was something we never really had to worry about," said Wright.
However, she began to notice that grass wouldn't grow in part of her yard, and that the area was very rocky. It wasn't until recently that Wright began digging up the back yard to prepare to build a new deck. She kept hitting large rocks. After hitting one rock after another, Wright noticed a grid pattern. It appeared the rocks were placed there intentionally, about six to eight feet apart.
"They were head markers," said Wright, who came to the conclusion after comparing the rocks in her yard to the ones in the nearby cemetery, only fifty feet from her house. She began marking the location of each rock she discovered in her yard with a stick.
"When we put the sticks up to pull them out, they were in perfect formation, in three rows," said Wright.
She called the state and was told any work had to stop, since moving or desecrating a grave is illegal.
"I couldn't dig, had to stop what I was doing to my property until somebody came up and verified yes there are bodies, or no, they're just stones," said Wright.
An archaeological dig with a team of workers and forensic specialists would be very expensive, and Wright doesn't think that's a cost she should bear.
"I'm not willing to pay because it's not something I knew about when I bought the house," she said.
She contacted Superior Management, the company that runs her homeowners association, and she says they directed her to the developer. According to Wright, the developers with Lockard Reed said they would help, but have yet to take any action.
For now, Wright has retained a lawyer, but will leave things as they are until they can dig up some more answers.
