EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Thursday is flag day, marking the day in 1777 when Congress adopted the stars and stripes as the official flag of the United States.

A local VFW hosted a ceremony to honor this day and a new Blue Star Memorial.

Thursday's ceremony was a celebration of the nation, honoring Flag Day and a dedication of a Blue Star Memorial.

The event was hosted here at the VFW post 1114 on the West side of Evansville and the Westwood Garden Club.

Post Commander Jerry Blake says this day was extra special because it was a celebration of all armed forces.

"Blue Star Memorial is actually dedicated to all veterans. We see gold star mothers, those are mothers of fallen comrades from past wars. Blue Star Memorial is dedicated to all veterans, no matter what branch," Blake told 14 News.
