OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -
There's more road construction in Owensboro, this time on the east end of town.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is widening the exit ramp from U.S. 60 to Highway 54.
The exit ramp will be widened to four lanes, and that's something drivers tell 14 News is a must have.
Drivers say Highway 54 gets more and more packed every day.
"The volume of traffic that we have, it's unbelievable," said driver Pearl Simon.
"New houses going in and a lot more developments are coming to this side of town," said driver Ryan Austin.
"It's extremely busy," said driver Steve Bittel.
Getting to Highway 54 from U.S. 60, Owensboro's bypass, can be a headache.
"It's pretty hectic. It's crowded and it's just bumper to bumper traffic. I've seen several near accidents," Simon said.
"In the evenings, it's horrible. I mean you have to sit on the bypass. I always try to avoid it and I've learned my way around," Bittel said.
"You can sit through two or three lights before you can get off," Austin said.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is working to fix this. It's widening the exit ramp to four lanes as part of its U.S. 60 extension project.
"Increasing it to four will be a big help," said Simon.
In addition to widening the exit ramp, a sensor will also be installed on the ramp to let the light know it needs to turn green when too many cars are waiting on the ramp.
There's no word yet on when the ramp will be finished.
