KENTUCKY (CNN) -
The NASCAR Spring Cup Series kicks off later this month at Kentucky Speedway.
More than 10,000 fans missed last year's inaugural race because of traffic and parking problems. Officials say this year, both the state and the track are ready.
It was a recipe for disaster, more than 100,000 race fans trying to get to a track that could not handle it.
"I have never known a speedway to open initially without problems. Everyone I have ever seen open and that's going way back to speedway in Florida. It opened and I was there and they had problems," said Bruton Smith, CEO of Sports Motorsports, INC.
They say the problems are fixed. On board a bus, even Governor Steve Beshear got a first hand tour of the nearly $15 million worth of improvements made by the track and the state, both inside and out.
There's a new parking lot that they say can accommodate 15 to 20 thousand more cars than last year.
Kentucky 35 was expanded to fit seven lanes and there's the tunnel for fans to walk through.
Governor Beshear says there will still be delays like you get at any event with this many people.
"And I think what we have done here will move any kinds of delays and traffic situations down into that category to where it's an expected kind of small delay instead of, of course, the huge problems that we have," Gov. Beshear said.
It's a promise the Speedway made to the thousands who never made it in to see the first NASCAR race in Kentucky, and they are determined to keep that promise this time around.
NASCAR teams begin practice at Kentucky Speedway on June 28th.
The Quaker State 400 race is June 30th.
