VANDERBURGH CO., IN (WFIE) -
Meth busts in Vanderburgh County are on pace to match the number of busts from one year ago, and a new meth suppression team is helping in the fight.
As of June 1st, the task force says it has taken 41 reports of meth labs and that's compared to 43 taken by the same time last year. They say also if this continues in this same pace, for the third consecutive year in a row, Vanderburgh County could lead the state in meth lab reports.
"Meth is a problem here in Vanderburgh County and we're actively out here trying to do something about it," said Detective Hensley with the EPD's meth suppression unit.
Hensley says a growing number of one-pot meth labs are making it more difficult to keep meth out of users' hands.
"Other counties, their problem may be crack-cocaine and that's not to say we don't have those drugs here. It just happens to be that for this area here for some geographical reason, I'm not sure why, meth is just the predominant drug right now," Detective Hensley said.
For the last two years, Vanderbugh County lead the state in meth lab cases.
But Detective Hensley says his team is finding more and more meth labs, taking them down, and also leading to a higher number of reports.
"We are actively out there seeking more labs which I think in turn makes us find more labs which kind of makes our numbers a little higher," Hensley said.
Police say the easier, one-pot method of producing meth is leading to more discoveries of meth labs outside the home and that's also leading to a rise of meth-related reports.
