OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

Police say a distraught woman jumped off the Blue Bridge in downtown Owensboro on Monday. Amazingly, the woman survived the fall and is now listed in fair condition.

Police say witnesses saw her stop her vehicle in the northbound lane and climb over the railing. As a patrol officer arrived, she jumped.

Michael Marcellino was riding his bike around English Park when he got the news.

"I heard some guy say that a woman jumped off the bridge then I saw an ambulance come down to the riverfront," Marcellino said.

"I noticed the cars stopped on the bridge, but before that there was sirens," said witness Patty Barnes.

"Witness stated they saw a female stop her vehicle on the bridge. Exit the vehicle and actually climb over the railing of the bridge. As the officers arrived on scene, the female jumped from the bridge," said OPD Officer Michael Hathaway.

"It's a very good fall. Stories at least and hitting that water. That impact I know it's got to be very painful," Marcellino said.

A Yager Materials tug boat, passing under the bridge, was able to pull her from the water.

From there, officers say the woman was taken to the English Park dock.

"She seemed to be in a lot of pain at the time and I really felt sorry for her. Sad that she didn't get the proper help before she make the decision to do something like that. It was kind of traumatizing to see someone in that much pain," Marcellino said.

She was then taken to a local hospital and officials say she is in fair condition.
