HENDERSON CO., KY (WFIE) -
As construction continues on Highway 60 in Henderson, some residents are raising concerns over traffic safety. Others say it's creating a nuisance when trying to drive across town.
Those 14 News spoke to on Saturday about the road closure say they are already seeing traffic issues, but they also say they understand the importance of the construction.
The eastbound U.S. 60 overpass at the U.S. 41 cloverleaf has been shut down since Friday. In that time, those driving through Henderson have had to find alternate routes between the north and south sides of town.
Some drivers say they have seen others illegally drive around the blocked off area of that overpass, and they say they are concerned about the potential traffic hazard that creates.
Others say that it doesn't effect them as much since they don't often use that route. They also say that even though the blocked route is a nuisance to some right now, they understand that this problem is short-term and that the construction is necessary.
"I can tell the frustration is, you see people try to weave in and out and then they get up to the detour and they're stuck. And it becomes a problem," said driver Jonathon Stocking.
"I certainly don't want to drive over an overpass that has got cracks or is maybe not real safe, so it has to be done. So there's no need in getting upset about it. Just give yourself a little extra time," said driver Lois Harper.
The closure of this area of Henderson is expected to last through June 17.
