Authorities Release Name of F-16 Pilot Killed in Crash

Indiana Governor Joe Kernan has released the name of the Indiana Air National Guard pilot killed in the collision and crash of two F-16 fighters Monday afternoon.

Killed in the crash was Major William E. Burchett of Arlington, Tennessee. In releasing the information, Kernan said, "We have all lost another of our favorite sons. It is a reminder that the business of the war fighter is a dangerous one, even when not in combat."

According to the Indiana Air Guard, the two planes were with the 181st Fighter Wing, based in Terre Haute. The pilots were on a routine training mission in a designated military operating area over the Indiana and Illinois border.
