OHIO CO, KY (WFIE) -
From Ohio County, Kentucky, the Sheriff is a little worried about the big rise in cases of prescription drug abuse. Detectives say getting to the source of the problem is tricky.
File after file and one complaint after the other.
"Out of all the drug complaints, I'd say pills, I'm getting three to one," said Narcotics Officer Doug Esther.
The Sheriff's Office says lately, prescription drug abuse cases have climbed and detectives know this is only a handful of what's really going on in the community.
"These cases are difficult to prosecute," Esther noted.
Since April, Esther says deputies have made several arrests, and he's currently working six cases related to pills alone.
"A lot of cases I've worked have been grandchildren stealing from grandparents," Esther said.
But it's not just the teens, he says.
"I've had cases where co-workers are stealing from co-workers."
Sheriff David Thompson says it's not just a problem in Ohio County.
"It's all across the United States and it's a big deal." he said.
Thompson said he is pleased with proactive measures within the department.
"We've met with pharmacists, and have taken an aggressive educational approach to this.this isn't just a Sheriff's Office problem. "
Thompson says authorities will continue to check these hot spot cards for leads and get in front of the problem before growing further.
