EVSC students get real-life experience at Deaconess

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Deaconess Hospital and EVSC are teaming up to give a select group of students a unique glimpse into hospital life during a two week medical camp.

Wednesday morning, students put on some realistic make-up to simulate trauma injuries.

"She has a lot of internal bleeding, her brain is bleeding out of her nose," says one student as she assesses the injuries of her friend.

The injuries may not be real, but the experience the 20 students are getting is.

"As we're making up these injuries, we explain to the students about leg injuries, head injuries, body injuries, so it's a way for them to both see it and learn about the injuries," says Kevin Hendrickson, Trauma Outreach Coordinator for Deaconess Hospital.

The lessons are getting through.

17-year old Haydyn Meythaler, who is about to be a senior at Harrison High School says "I've learned more about the bruising on the face and what internal trauma means. And when things need to be treated, especially what injuries need to be treated before others."

Students are selected through an interview process. They must meet certain GPA requirements, and also have an interest in medicine.

For the next two weeks these students will be staying in dorms at the hospital while they go on rotations with doctors, sit in on surgeries and try the newest equipment.

"This evening they'll be at gateway hospital where they'll operate the DaVinci Surgical Robot. It's something even healthcare professionals in Evansville, some haven't had the chance to do," says Chris Gibson, who coordinates the program.

Many time the program produces doctors who end up working in the community.

"We have doctors, we have graduates who are nurses actually in Deaconess," says Gibson.
