Evansville wants to increase water rates

Posted: Updated:
EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

The City of Evansville wants to raise water rates, and on Monday water customers learned what the city is proposing.

Customers who use 5,000 gallons a month could expect to pay an extra $3 a month right away. Then in 2014, the monthly rate would jump about $2. By 2015, water customers can expect to pay another $1.50 more per month.

The city says it needs the money for capital improvements. Monday night's meeting was just a field hearing to take public comment. It's the first step in the Indiana Utilities Regulatory Commission process before allowing or denying a rate increase.

"Tonight, we heard from a variety of customers. We know that there is still opportunity for comment, so we will be waiting to hear what everyone has to say," said Danielle McGrath with Indiana Utilities Regulatory Commission.

"We'll also file those with the regulatory commission so that they will be in the formal case record, which the commission is required by law to review before it makes a final decision," said Anthony Swinger with Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor.

The proposed increases are only for the city's water rates, not sewer rates.
